What is the function of the skeletal system?                                                                                      The skeletal system actually serves 6 functions.
See if you can name them.  Scroll to the bottom
of the page to check your answers.

Compact Bone magnified 40x. Each collection of cirucular
layers around one Haversian Canal is called an
osteon.

Bone cells that make new bone are called osteoblasts.  When osteoblast mature they are surrounded by bone and are then called osteocytes.  There is another type of bone cell called osteoclasts. The osteoclast "eat" or destroy bone so that bone can be remodeled.
Why is calcium important for bones?  See below for the answer.

What gives bone flexibility?  See below!

Compact bone magnified 100x. The dark black
ovals are the osteocytes. Osteocytes ar bone
cells that make the bone matrix. The blue circle
identifies one osteon.

The second game, you assemble the skeleton.

The six functions of the skeletal system are:
1. Support your body.
2. Gives your body shape.
3. Protects your organs.
4. Blood cell production occurs in your bone marrow.
5. Provides storage for lipids and minerals.
6. Enables your body to move.

Calcium is important to bones because calcium makes bones very strong.

Collagen is a protein found in bone that allows bone to be flexible.

Below are pictures of showing the anatomy of a long bone.  While they have more information than is required at this grade level, I colored the structures that are relevant to our class.  There is a link to these sheets if you would like to use them for your student.  They are taken from a website called Biology Corner.
